The Bullitt County ambulance that ran a red light was hit by a tractor-trailer in a Louisville intersection.

A paramedic suffered life-threatening injuries when he was ejected from an ambulance Monday in Louisville.

The ambulance that was transporting a patient ran a red light and was struck by a tractor-trailer, WLKY reported.

The medic who was treating a patient in the back was ejected.

Bullitt County EMS Director Chris Hale told reporters: "We were very concerned about all of those involved. Once we got to the hospital, we got some more information. It was very somber."

The driver of the ambulance was released after treatment. The original patient fled the scene, but was later apprehended.

The medic who sustained multiple fractures, internal injuries and a possible head injury is in the intensive care unit.

"We never like to see anybody deal with a situation like this at all. But yes, it's especially hard when it's one of our own," said Rebekah Osman, the Bullitt County EMS deputy director.
